Joseph Cornell Boxes

I could not decide which Cornell box was my favorite. So I have narrowed my favorites down to two.

I absolutely LOVE the bird in this box. The chipped paint and sanded wood inside the box makes me feel as though I should see this in someone's beach house. I also like the vintage feel or the items in this box. The idea of being able to interact with this piece of art is a very neat idea. The little details in the background add a touch of interest. The damaged, antiqued 'Hotel Eden' poster and the small words on the backing makes this piece even more intricate. I wish I knew what the metal spider web like item was in the corner was.

This next piece intrigues me because of the blue sand and broken glass. The sand seems to continuously flow into the broken glass that cannot hold more. Again, to me, the box looks as though it should be displayed in a beach house. I love the contrast of the deep blue and the white washed wood. I also like the half buried cork in the right hand corner.

Form and Content

This took me a lot longer to post an entry than I think it should have. For a while I was stumped as for what I should do. I looked at Eusher and some of his work. I looked at cupcakes with fun designs. I looked at images inside of a single larger image. I looked at words creating images. I looked at photographs of brides in their wonderfully beautiful, traditional wedding gowns. Nothing seemed to fit the idea of form and content flowing seamlessly together. While looking, I found was a quote from Paul Rand:

“A work of art is realized when form and content are indistinguishable. When they are in synthesis. In other words, when they fuse. When form predominates, meaning is blunted… When content predominates, interest lags.”

I wanted to find something different, but I seemed to be looking in all the wrong places. Something that came up in our discussion during class was about advertisements. We did not dive into it deep (I believe the other class did), but it got me thinking... what about signs?! So here is what I decided to display. I still do not know that it is the 'perfect' depiction of form and content, but I am going to attempt to explain it as best as I can.

When I saw this sign I tried to read it. Unfortunately, it took a few minutes to register that the words are upside down and backwards. Yes, I probably should have been drawn to the dark shadow that was simple to read, but no. Not me, I always figure out a way to make things a little more complicated. Ok, not the point. Anyways... The definition of form is the work's style or method, while the content is the essence of the image. The form of this is the sign, but the message displayed is simple and to the point. I thought it was a brilliant idea to make it readable when the sun shines on it in just the right light. When the message is used properly, viewed the way it was intended, the message is plain and simple. Maybe, you should take a break under an umbrella, or reapply some sun block. Honestly, I think this sign is radical, but I am still left wondering, if you shine the light the other way through it... can you still read it?

Definition of Design

The assignment is to define 'Design'. I was given the task to search around, preferably online, and find the definition I like best and include an image that corresponds with the definition. So, here I go...
My definition comes from design.org.
     Design:
            1) To create, fashion, or construct according to plan
            2) a. To conceive and plan out in the mind
                b. To have as a purpose
                c. To devise for a specific function or end

While I was surfing around I fell in love with a few images and ideas, so here are two, one for each part of the definition.
1) To create, fashion, or construct according to plan:
This tree house is so off the wall! I love the creativity behind this structure. The idea of being in a sphere up in a tree is almost inconceivable. I am sure when the architect originally explained his plan, no one would believe it.

2)  a. To conceive and plan out in the mind
     b. To have as a purpose
     c. To devise for a specific function or end

This building bends and curves. How many buildings do you know of that curve similar to this? I came across this building while searching Frank Gehry architecture. I love the way the building curves, while the mirrors reflect the sky and a little bit of the surrounding area. If you notice the windows, the remain straight while the building itself curves around them, causing them to jut out in a semi-random fashion. Buildings like this blows the average square ones out of the water.

Types of Design

When you say the word 'design' many different things come to mind, or at least hopefully that's what happens. There's photography, architecture, engineering, and the list keeps going. For my assignment, I had to choose three different designs and post an image for each one, I chose graphic design, fashion, and interior design all with a kick of zebra.

Graphic Design:
I don't know what it is about this picture, but when I looking at multiple images, this one caught my eye first. I like that the muzzle and body have been edited out. The sharp shading and lines in the actual pattern also made this even more appealing.

Fashion:
Who doesn't like fashion? Everyone's taste is completely their own and describes their personality. Even when people say that they aren't creative, they are forgetting that every day they start with a clean canvas and a full wardrobe. I had to post two pictures because I absolutely LOVE shoes (plus the photography was interesting), but that hat... its edgy and it takes guts to pull it off.

Interior Design:
Have you ever walked into someone's house and gasped because it was stunning? Between the actual architecture and layout, design is everywhere. The design of a house is just the base. All the accessories, furniture, and little touches are what really makes a house your own. I adore the crisp, clean lines in this room making it modern and cutting edge, while the rug adds a touch of luxe to the room.

The Beginning....

Have you ever just wanted to start something, but you are not sure how? That is where I am at. I cannot wait to begin with my art projects. I am dying to explore and expand my creativity. I want to test my abilities and range. I know that about mid-way through the semester school is going to become a chore, as it always does, but for now it’s still new and exciting. But I truly hope that this art class will be my outlet. When I get stressed hopefully I will be able to use this class to relieve pressure and still have a lot of fun with. This is the beginning of a whole new slate. So, let's get going already!
